about
When we (Michael and I) wrote this song together I was beginning to realize the importance of focusing on the present. I struggled in the past with taking my time on things because I was leaning into all of these external distractions and pressures and believed I needed to rush into things in order to achieve success - which is the exact opposite of what I should’ve been doing. At the time, I felt like I didn’t have the same excitement about making music and was sad that I had lost my passion. I came to learn that having such ridiculous and rigid expectations for myself was only expediting my burnout. I was ultimately wearing myself too thin when I didn’t need to be worrying as much as I was. This song is also about my attempt to release recurring intrusive thoughts that have a hold on me but having no idea how. Some of those thoughts had to do with insecurities about my career, my personality, how I come across, my appearance, embarrassing interactions with people - essentially anything that my mind would hold onto.
I think it's difficult to write songs about something other than romantic love, and still be able to communicate the intensity with which those feelings can hit a person. Some of the entries on this album are fantastic examples of this niche. dani_bloop
A soaring, searing blend of indie and psych rock from Soft Walls captures the highs of early romance and the lows of depression all in one. Bandcamp New & Notable May 9, 2023
Alvvays has always been great, but with this album they took it to the next level. Every one of these songs is lodged in my brain now, permanently (in a good way). s. moxley
